The Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) witnessed a growth of 24 per cent in the turnover in the first quarter of calendar 2010 over the same period last year due to higher volulmes, an analysis of market reports reveals. 12 auctions were held for the period between between January and March when 1.09 crore kg were sold as compared to 0.88 crore kg reported last year. But, the average price of Rs 69.56 a kg fetched was just more than eight paise last year. The turnover surged from Rs 61.14 crore to Rs 75.82 crore, a growth of 24 per cent. Meanwhile, there was a decline in the prices in recent weeks. The prices, which averaged Rs 72.88 a kg by end of January, fell to Rs 71.97 by end of February and further to Rs 69.56 by end of March. Currently, the prices are ruling lower than last year. The average price this week was Rs 62.70/kg as against Rs 71.48 this time last year.
