English Translation:
National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) is set to reduce its iron ore prices. Iron ore that accounts for about 40 per cent of the total cost for steel production and any fluctuations in its price impacts the steel makers big time. The steel makers which were impacted due to the surge in raw materials costs and slackened demand, may now take a breather.
NMDC, after a mid term price cut of 25 per cent in December 2008, has room for further reduction in prices of iron ore lumps by another 20 per cent to $62 per tonne.
The prices of iron ore fines can also be trimmed by another 10 per cent to $71 per tonne on a cumulative basis, thus benefiting JSW Steel, Ispat Industries and Essar Steel, who purchase about 22 million tonnes of iron ore from NMDC.
